“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7 Many people seek out happiness and comfort through worldly things. A bigger house will bring joy, a promotion will bring satisfaction, a better marriage will bring a smile to our faces. However, we know from this verse that the peace available from our Father surpasses even our imagined ideas of what peace truly is. And, when our hearts are deeply rooted in Christ Jesus, we will be guarded from the temptation of sin. Even our minds can be protected from the Evil One. Despite what is going on around us, the Lord can provide us with a peace beyond what we now know, for we will have our eyes locked on the future, our future in Heaven. How reassuring it is to know of our endless rewards when we withstand the sorrows.
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to know.
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
We know that when we believe in the salvation of Christ, our souls are redeemed. So, why do we measure our safety by our physical bodies when they are temporal and mortal? Our salvation is assured for eternity. Our peace lies in that fact. Rely on the sanctification of our spiritual selves and worry not of earthly things, for we are guaranteed an eternity of joy in Heaven with Him.
Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.
Many of us are troubled by our messy, sinful pasts. However, that part of us was hung on the cross the day our Savior was sacrificed. And then, on the third day of our deaths, we were raised again with Jesus, and born again into a life protected against sin. Yes, we will fall back into our human nature of sin, but thanks to His death, and his rebirth, we are guarded from the death of sin: Hell. Our minds and hearts are now able to resist and rebuke sin in the Lord’s name and live unchained by it. Hallelujah!
For me, be it Christ, be it Christ hence to live:
If Jordan above me shall roll,
No pang shall be mine, for in death as in life,
Thou wilt whisper Thy peace to my soul.
No matter if kingdoms fall or nations perish, we have the Creator of all of it on our sides. He provides us with a peace and comfort that transcends all we understand of happiness. If we give our lives over to Christ, only then, will we find that ultimate joy of living rightly and just. The Prince of Peace is our friend. The Holy Spirit is our comforter. Our God will speak hope through His holy word. Stay close to Him through prayer and reading.
But Lord, ’tis for Thee, for Thy coming we wait,
The sky, not the grave, is our goal;
Oh, trump of the angel! Oh, voice of the Lord!
Blessed hope, blessed rest of my soul.
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
A song in the night, oh my soul!
In every moment of every day, our focus is not our daily chores, or our jobs, or even our friends, but that of serving our God, of carrying out His will. For we know Jesus’ arrival is soon. We know He is coming back at any moment and we want to be prepared. We long to see Him face to face. We are desperate to cling to His robes. We know that only then will we receive complete healing from sin and reach our true potential in His presence. We have so much to hope for. We should rest in the promise of our Savior’s return. We await the moment when the trumpets sound and the clouds are rolled back to reveal the King of the Universe at last. We do not want to be asleep on this wondrous night. Keep a wary eye and be ready.
